“What’s an old drag queen doing up here?”
Gay actor/writer/director John Cameron Mitchell asked this of the star-studded New York audience when he stepped up to receive a special Tony Award last night for reviving his role as Hedwig in the show of the same name.
In the most enchanting speech of the whole evening, Mitchell thanked The American Theater Wing for recognising and honoring his show from way back in the days when “trans was a weird word and punk rock was nowhere close to Broadway.”
