★★★★ Work Bitch | Last weekend when I awoke from the coma I had slipped into due to consuming copious amounts of wine I came across the new single of the one and only Ms Britney Spears! My Sunday had just gotten a whole lot better.
Like her or not, there is no denying Britney Spears is a superstar. Since bursting on to the pop scene in 1998 with her debut single “… Baby One More Time” Britney has churned out hit after hit and has been the most consistent maker of hit songs for over a decade. She has been criticised on her talent and her personal life has had its fair share of ups and downs (who can forget the hair shaving escapade) but her resilience, star quality and likability has kept her at the top of her game for 15 years and she is back with a bang!
“Work Bitch” is the lead single from her forth coming, eight studio album and what a belter it is. Co-written and produced by will.i.am and featuring Swedish House Mafia’s Sebastian Ingrosso on the credits, this is a bold slice of futuristic dance-pop. “Leaked” one day ahead of its official world premiere this single has hit written all over it! This dance floor stomper is somewhat a risk for Britney to use as a lead single for a new album, but a risk I predict will pay off massively. Unlike Gaga’s “Applause” where I had to listen to it several times before I fell in love with it, this has instant WOW factor and no doubt will be blaring in gay clubs worldwide from tonight.
The beat is banging and from the get go punches you square on the face. The sound is very current and makes me want to shake my pie in ways that would make my father turn in his grave! Vocally it’s weak but hey that’s not what makes Brits special now is it? Most of it is talk-sung with short parts previewing her trademark, nasally, head voice. She is certainly no Celine Dion! Lyrically it isn’t genius either – “You want to live fancy? Live in a big mansion? Party in France? You better work bitch.” But it’s fun just like Britney! As the beat leads up to the chorus you feel the tension and you just know it’s nearly time to go wild on the floor. When she tells you “Now get to work bitch” at this point, if you have long hair, you should swing it Britney style and if you don’t you better pretend you f**king do!
This single gives Ms Spears back her rightful place on the throne. She has what a lot of new artists fail to have. Staying power! Oops she’s done it again looking fabulous into the bargain. 8/10 from me, it’s a futuristic, forward thinking delight. Just like her good self, this song is FIERCE! It’s got me a little moist at the thought of her new album.
The girl is back on form. Still got it, never lost it!
It’s Britney Bitch
Work Bitch is out 3rd November 2013 on RCA
